Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme - Communications from HMRC
The Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme provided much needed support to employers during the COVID-19 pandemic – as a firm we completed claims totalling more than £6 million pounds of support for our clients!
HMRC estimate that overall, £ 3.2 billion was claimed either in error or as a result of fraudulent claims and they are now focusing on clawing back any CJRS that was claimed incorrectly. They are currently writing to those companies that they believe may need to make an adjustment.
There are generic letters being sent to any employers who submitted a CJRS claim, and these can cause worry for anyone who receives them – please rest assured where they are generic, this is not HMRC suggesting that you need to repay anything, it is merely a general reminder that if you don’t believe your claim was correct, you should come forward now. Often these require no action.
There are also more targeted letters being sent to employers where HMRC believe that there was an error, or in some cases, a fraudulent claim, and these are more specific to your claims and often ask for you to provide more information in relation to how the claim was made up.
If you receive any of this type of correspondence from HMRC, please get in touch to make sure we are aware of it, and we will be able to advise you on the best course of action.
If you have subscribed to our Jerroms Protect service, any costs incurred in our assisting or liaising with HMRC are covered under the terms of the policy, which means you don’t need to worry about incurring any professional fees – which in turn allows us to persevere without being time restricted, often meaning a better outcome overall.
